“Keeping The Dream Alive” Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Dinner

I had the distinct pleasure of attending the 21st annual “Keeping the Dream Alive” dinner in Nashua, New Hampshire. It was a profound experience that resonated deeply with me. Hosted by the National Cultural Diversity Awareness Council (NCDAC) on January 20, 2025, this event commemorated the enduring legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

The evening was emceed by Rick McKenna, President of the British American Business Council of New England. He shared a poignant story about meeting Ansil Saunders, a fishing guide from Bimini, who had carved a bust of Dr. King amidst remote mangrove trees. This serene location symbolized Dr. King’s commitment to peace and his connection to the Bahamas, where he penned several speeches, including his Nobel Peace Prize acceptance speech.

Governor Kelly Ayotte of New Hampshire delivered a heartfelt speech emphasizing the importance of volunteerism and service in honoring Dr. King’s legacy. She issued one of her first proclamations as Governor, highlighting Dr. King, the national holiday, and the work done by Wayne Jennings and the NCDAC. Governor Ayotte also outlined her plans to improve the state’s economy and development, reflecting a commitment to progress and inclusivity.

The keynote address was delivered by David Clay, His Majesty’s Consul General to New England. He spoke about the close connections between the United Kingdom and New England, noting the shared names of many towns and locations. Clay highlighted Dr. King’s impact in the UK, mentioning his four visits and the statue of him in Westminster Abbey. He quoted Dr. King’s acceptance speech at the University of Newcastle, emphasizing the role of law in changing societal habits and, eventually, hearts. Clay linked this to global progress inspired by Dr. King’s message.

A highlight of the night was meeting Governor Ayotte. Our conversation touched upon the importance of diversity and the ongoing efforts to promote inclusivity within the state. It was inspiring to see leadership committed to these values.

During the evening, Elbit America was presented with an award in recognition of their community support and for promoting the values of Dr. King. Suneet Chadha, President KMC, accepted the award on Elbit’s behalf, commenting that Elbit’s culture of diversity and inclusion reflects Dr. King’s values.

The event also featured a diverse gathering of individuals from various backgrounds, all united in honoring Dr. King’s legacy. The sense of community and shared purpose was palpable, reminding me of the universal relevance of Dr. King’s dream.

Reflecting on the evening, I am reminded of the power of unity and the importance of continuing the work towards a more inclusive and equitable society. Dr. King’s legacy serves as a guiding light, inspiring us all to keep the dream alive.
